Day 1: Day 1 Lyon (D)

Welcome to Lyon. You will be met at the airport and transferred to the ship where you will be welcomed by your Captain and crew. Tonight enjoy a welcome reception and dinner on board.

Day 2: Lyon (B,L,D)

Lyon is France’s third largest city, a former Roman capital positioned at the conference of the Rhone and Saone rivers, which is steeped in history. Your tour starts with a drive to the Basilique Notre Dame de Fourviere, Lyon’s hilltop church, with stunning views over the town. Then pass by the recently re–discovered Roman amphitheatre and walk through the cobbled streets of the gastronomic old town including the secret laneways. This evening sail north through the beautiful Beaujolais region.

Day 3: Chalon-Sur-Saone – Beaune (B,L,D)

Chalon–Sur–Saone is best known as the birthplace of photography and the centre of Burgundy’s wine region. Travel by road to the quaint village of Beaune, where we visit the Hospices de Beaune, one of the finest examples of French fifteenth–century architecture. Marvel at the multi–coloured roofs of this former hospital, now a museum, which has become one of the symbols of Burgundy. Return to the ship for lunch, and then depart this afternoon for Macon arriving in the evening. Tonight, enjoy local entertainment on board. Emerald Active: Join your guide for a bike excursion from Tournus to Macon while the ship sails (active fitness level).

Day 4: Macon (B,L,D)

Arrive in Macon, another important wine region and gateway to the Beaujolais vineyards. Walk the Heritage Trail from Old Saint Vincent to the General Hospital buildings, half–timbered house and Soufflot Chapel, maybe trying some local wines at the many tasting displays in the town. Enjoy time at leisure in the afternoon.

Day 5: Tournon (B,L,D)

Join your local guide for a walking tour of Tournon, which is dominated by the 16th century castle and roman ruins, and is nestled in the valley near the steep slopes of le Massif Central, France's 3rd largest mountain range. The area has a long tradition in wine making, including the renowned wine growing centre of Tain l'Hermitage across the river. Emerald Active: Guided biking tour to Glun. This afternoon You’re Invited: Cheese and olive oil tasting on board.

Day 6: Avignon (B,L,D)

Avignon has a rich history from Celtic beginnings to being the residence of the Popes and later central to the French Revolution. Although a fortified town, it is the Papal Palace which stands more secure on a hill in the centre of town; its walls are 17–18 feet thick. Your guided walk with a local guide takes you through this historic centre strolling the cobbled laneways and browsing the shops, overlooking the famous 'Pont de Avignon'. The rest of the day is at leisure. You’re Invited: Provencal dinner on board hosted by a popular local chef as well as traditional local style concert known as Chanson music.

Day 7: Avignon - Arles (B,L,D)

Sail into the Camargue wilderness region to the capital of Provence, Arles where you will join your local guide for a walking tour showcasing the highlights of the city in particular the exterior of the 2000 year old Roman Amphitheatre still in use today, which was originally built to hold 20,000 spectators in the style of the Colosseum in Rome. The rest of the day is at leisure to relax on board and explore Arles further.

Day 8: Disembarkation - Barcelona (B,D)

After breakfast disembark your river cruise ship and transfer^ to Avignon train station to board your high speed train to Barcelona, which normally takes around 4 hours. Welcome to Barcelona, the vibrant capital of Catalonia. You will be met at the airport and transferred to your centrally located hotel. Meet your Tour Director and fellow passengers for a welcome dinner and briefing.

Day 9: Barcelona (B,D)

Your city tour today takes in Montjuic, the picturesque hill overlooking the city and former Jewish settlement. Visit Sagrada Familia the famous cathedral designed by Gaudi whose controversial and intricate design is reflected in much of Barcelona’s architecture. Stroll the corridor of Las Ramblas where street performers feature on every corner, then through the old town. The rest of the day is at leisure. Dinner tonight will be at a typical ‘Masia’ restaurant.

Day 10: Barcelona (B)

Enjoy a full day at leisure today. Your Tour Leader will be on hand to assist you in planning your day. Perhaps visit the Bullring, the magnificent Noucamp stadium, or relax along the waterfront area.

Day 11: Barcelona - Madrid (B,D)

Journey by high speed train to Madrid, then transfer to your centrally located hotel. Your sightseeing tour includes the Sabatini Gardens and the 18th century Royal Palace of Madrid as well as an orientation tour of the downtown Austrian quarter featuring the impressive Plaza Major. Tonight enjoy a dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 12: Madrid (B)

A day at leisure in Madrid to possibly visit the Prado Museum or Bullring.

Day 13: Madrid to Cordoba (B)

Travel south and visit Consuegra which is famous for the best examples of Spanish windmills and the home of the Spanish knights. Arrive in Cordoba a city known for its blend of Jewish and Moorish influences.

Day 14: Cordoba - Granada (B)

Your morning guided tour takes in the Aljama Mosque one of the most emblematic examples of Islamic Art which famously features a Christian cathedral inside it. After free time for lunch, continue onto Granada and enjoy a walking orientation of the city centre and a free evening.

Day 15: Granada - Malaga (B,D)

Granada is home to the impressive Alhambra Palace, one of Spain’s most recognisable Moorish structures completed in the 14th century when Spain was largely occupied by Muslim invaders. Visit this impressive UNESCO World Heritage site. En route to Malaga You’re Invited to a home hosted lunch in Alfarnatejo a typical Andalusian village. Continue to Malaga, on the ‘Costa del Sol’.

Day 16: Malaga (B)

This morning take a guided walking tour of Malaga seeing the Alcazaba Walls and Gibralfaro Castle. Visit the Museum of Arts located in a historical building showcasing local traditions. This afternoon and evening are at leisure to go to the beach, stroll the shops and promenade and just relax.

Day 17: Gibraltar - Seville (B,D)

The rock of Gibraltar is a territory of the United Kingdom that sits at the mouth of the Mediterranean at the very foot of Spain. For many centuries it has been an important strategic port for the British Navy. Visit the Rock which is home to Barbary Apes and diverse birdlife as well as the old town dotted with traditional English pubs. Continue onto Seville and check into your hotel where dinner is included in a local restaurant.

Day 18: Seville (B)

Seville is the capital of Andalucia. Visit the Alcazar and see the impressive 15th Century Cathedral built on the site of the former mosque, incorporating the famous Bell Tower as part of its structure. Wander the windy laneways of the old town then visit Seville’s wonderful Plaza de Espana. You’re Invited Flamenco Show this evening.

Day 19: Seville to Lisbon (B,D)

Travel through the Aracena mountain range into Portugal. Arrive in the capital Lisbon in the afternoon and settle into your hotel where dinner is included.

Day 20: Lisbon (B)

Join your local guide for a city tour of this fascinating city, one of the oldest in Europe. Visit the impressive Belem Tower and see the Monument to the Discoverers. Enjoy a tasting of local pastries and a visit to Jeronimos Monastery then the rest of the day is at leisure to explore the old town or visit the famous castle.

Day 21: Lisbon (B)

Day 22: Lisbon (B)

Transfer to the airport this morning for your home bound or onward flight or extend to our Secrets of the Douro river cruise.
