If you've cruised Europe's majestic rivers with us and fallen in love with unpacking once and waking up in a new location every day, swapping stories of the day's adventures with fellow guests at dinner, making new friends and vowing never to leave your 'Star Ship', you've probably also wondered "Where can we go next?". We hear you and we’re here to help.
This year, we're launching three brand new ships. Due to the incredible success of our original Emerald ‘Star Ships’ we’ve replicated this award-winning formula and you can now experience the same cruising magic on Portugal’s Douro River and the Rhone River in Southern France. Keep reading to learn more!
Introducing the Emerald Liberté – a smaller version of her big sisters, Emerald Sky, Star, Sun and Dawn but with all the standard comforts you’ve come to expect from a ‘Star Ship’. This includes the indoor pool that transforms into a cinema at night, spacious cabins with innovative drop down windows in all Suites, and beautiful dining and lounge areas. This ship just has fewer number of rooms and cruises the Rhône & Saône Rivers of Southern France.
On this itinerary, you’ll be treated to a romantic French setting with quaint towns and vineyards lining the river banks. Be delighted with French flavours of Provence including France’s gastronomic capital, Lyon. Surround yourself with history and step back in time with visits to the Arles Colosseum, Palais du Pape and Hospice de Beaune.
You’re invited to traditional French Provençal dinner hosted by local celebrity chef, Fabien Morreale, where you'll be treated to a special highlight dinner onboard. This style, also known as terroir, is simply a term used for farm or country style cuisine. Be comforted by a nourishing meal where freshness and simplicity bring out the true taste of local produce. Also experience a cheese and olive oil tasting where you'll indulge in a selection of fabulous gourmet cheeses and just picked fresh olives during a tasting extravaganza. Learn about the many varieties and how to pair these with dishes and/or beverages. What better way to spend a lazy afternoon!
Presenting the Emerald Radiance! Due to the characteristics of the Douro River, the design of Radiance has been modified a little. Smaller tahn her sister 'Star Ships', she still features spacious suites with innovative drop down windows^ and beautiful dining and lounge areas, however her pool is on the roof, so you can take a dip while enjoying the Portuguese sun.
Catch traditional villages including Pinhao, Pocinho and Regua dotted along the Douro River as the waterway meanders around family farms and vineyards hugging the steep hillside. You'll be transported back in time to discover the secret methods of fortified winemaking handed down through the generations. You’ll also visit the lively city of Porto, renowned for its riverside cafes and extensive wine cellars in the area of Vila Nova de Gaia.
"You’re Invited" to dine at a traditional wine estate where you'll soak up the beautiful views from the estate’s terrace and be hosted to a sumptuous meal. While sailing, your barman will teach you the art of making cocktails using port. Typically served neat, Port has a long history as a main ingredient in cocktails. As far back as the 17th century, sea captains and the British gentry would combine Port with sugar, water and nutmeg to create sangaree – the forerunner of sangria.
From the fantastic feedback from the first four ‘Star Ships’, Emerald Destiny will be just like the Emerald Sky, Star, Sun and Dawn and will also cruise the Rhine, Main and Daube Rivers. If you're looking for something a little different, Destiny will also be exploring the Rhine River between Amsterdam and Basel, Switzerland, as well as the lower Danube between Budapest and Bucharest.
Between Amsterdam and Basel, enjoy breathtaking landscapes, beautiful gardens and historic towns. On this trip, you’ll sail through the quaint Dutch countryside scattered with windmills, dramatic German gorges , the infamous Lorelei Statue and Pfalzagrafenstein Castle, plus countless vineyards. You’ll also travel to the beautiful Black Forest region of Germany where “You’re Invited” to a traditional gasthof to sample the famous Black Forest gateau.
From Budapest, the Daube River flows into the heart of Eastern Europe. A region known for spectacular and ruggered landscapes coupled with diverse and vibrant cities, the lower Danube is one of Europe’s best kept secrets. You'll be treated to a Hungarian Puszta horse show and ‘You’re Invited’ to learn about traditional life at a home hosted dinner in Croatia. Sail past the famous Iron Gates of Romania, visit Europe’s largest building, the Palace of the Parliament in Bucharest, and much more.
You can seamlessly link these cruises together for the ultimate river cruising experience like no other. With optional stays in Lisbon, Madrid, Nice, Paris and Barcelona, you'll be spoilt for choice and value.
